into the Galaxie

That's right ... Galaxie, not Galaxy. A radio-station in the north of France founded in 1981.
In the early nineties they decided to start programming 100% electronic music, and this made them a great inspiration during my youth. Techno, house, trance, elektro, ambient ... 24hrs a day. Can you imagine how happy i was when i discovered them at 95.3fm? (nowadays you can join them through their livestream).

The set underneath is a random recording i did on a fridaynight in 1991. It's a continuous mix (no chit-chat whatsoever) packed with rave-jams. This 60-minute-mix is one of my personal favorite sets ever (and i have quit a few). Maybe i'll try and make a tracklist in the next few days, but for now just have a listen.

Galaxie 1991.

PS: i was surprised on the good sound-quality of the tape (after 18 years it's still very ok!).

Balmoral

I know it's been ages since i posted a new mix (and i also know that i say that almost every time :p) ... so here's something to end your weekend, or to kick off a new week.
A set by Kevin, recorded at Balmoral in 1996. I don't think Kevin needs any introduction (and neither does Balmoral). As a dj he always seemed to give his sets that extra touch thanks to excellent mixing skills and an extraordinary taste in music. His backspins are legendary and so are his "eighties" influences (a little hint in the video underneath).

KAOS

So here's a little challenge ... i went through my tape-collection last week and picked this set out, put it into my tape-deck and pressed play. I was surprised, not only by the energy but also by the sound quality which had remained very good (maxell xl2 :)).
Only 1 problem: the dj's name wasn't tagged on this tape. So i have the name of the club, party, date and even a flyer (thx to www.atribute2cherrymoon.com) ... time for the experts to have a listen and tell me who's playing (could even be 2 different dj's).
Enjoy this piece of techno, i'll try and edit this post once the panel has decided who's behind the decks :p

Cherry Moon, Kaos-party 30.04.95. (95 idd although i wrongfully tagged it 96)

Under a Cherry Moon

No time for chit-chat today :)
So here's the essence: Dj Yves Deruyter at Cherry Moon, 07.01.95.
Somehow the first weekend of the new year was always a top-night at Cherry Moon (check the tribute site!!), ... incredible atmosphere when the beautifully wasted came together!

January 5, 2009

Over a month and a half since my last post ... let's say i've been rather busy doing other stuff (like partying my ass off from Antwerp to Leuven over Ghent).
First of all a happy new-year to all of you, hope you'll have some splendid parties in 2009.
This year will be rather busy for me (constructing my house), but i'll try to keep this blog alive be feeding it with some new sets every now and then.

First runner up: dj Marko, who will always be associated with La Rocca. Mind you, he had some other residencys to a.o. in the legendary At the Villa (Kooigem), but also at Fuse 2nd room BUMP (better known as the Motion-room). Round '96 he played on regular basis alongside dj Phi-Phi. The set underneath was recorded at the 2 years Fuse-night and it's my favourite Marko-tape. If anyone ever asks you what trance or club-music sounded like in '96, please offer them this tape.

Deg

Here's a nice set to end your weekend, start a new week, or look forward to whatever's coming your way. 90 minutes of Deg, the highly respected Fuse-resident. What to expect? Uhm ... techno? More specific: a bangin' party-set, not the warming-up kinda stuff.

Deg at Fuse, 11.04.98.

Re-post: Katrien Klausing

Here's a new upload on an ambient-set recorded at Montini. It's been offline for a while, so if you missed the original post here's your chance to catch up ;)

The weekend's been great, thx to another fantastic edition of Rave Our Souls!! Several videos have been posted on youtube, but guess what i bumped into using the "rave"-tag ... enjoy this piece of work.

Positive education

...not only a Slam-classic, but also the name of an Antwerp techno-night. I don't have a clue what the line-up looked like that night, but 1 thing's for sure: Steve Cop played a tremendous set.

Another certainty: you can down it over here :)

Just for the record:

55

A while ago i posted a set recorded in 1991 at "Le fifty-five". If you missed it, it's still out for grabs in the "favourites"-section.
Anywayz, going 1 step further = posting a 1990-set :) So that's what i did. And if you thought people had forgotten about this club, think again and join the group skyline - 37.5 - fifty five on Facebook to meet some likeminded.

Don't forget to tune in this saturday for the first Belgian "beat" 100. Livestream on STUBRU.BE.
And thx Knack for having such great taste :p

That's right, not a club-recording but a mix Nilz (los marginales) did.
I know the net is packed with classic-sets, but this one totally represents the sound of this blog ... listening to it takes me back the late nineties in the Fuse Motion-room (round 5 or 6 o'clock).
Enjoy it like i did!

And while we're at it; i usually try not to live in the past too much but friday i had a blast at the first "legendary clubs-night", this weekend i'm attending "the Greatest Switch" in Antwerp (vote!), and on November 8th i'll be raving my soul in Hasselt with Human Resource and Altern8.
Good times.

The greatest Switch: dance top 100

I don't understand why people are always nagging about the lack of interest in electronic music in the media. Let's be honest, over here in Belgium there's no reason to complain.
Ever since the early '90s national radio Studio Brussel made their contribution thanks to Teknoville, taking over the airwaves every friday and saturdaynight. About 8 years ago Teknoville got a serious make-over, and from then on it was renamed Switch ... an other name, but still a great (and similar) concept!

Today, after over 15 years of electronic music on national radio it's finally time to make a summary and chart the 100 best dance-tracks. How to do this? By sending a top5 to this link.
I strongly advise everyone to participate in order to keep high standards :p

Needless to say how hard it is to choose 5 tracks. But on the other hand, 10 or 20 would be just as difficult.

Here's the top5 i sent, ask me again tomorrow and it might look completely different :)

5. Laurent Garnier - Astral Dreams (Speakers mix)

4. Jones & Stephenson - The first Rebirth

3. Rob Dougan - Clubbed to death

2. Plastikman - Spastik

1. Wink - Higher state of Consciousness (Tweekin acid funk mix)

Feel free to post your personal chart in the comments, and don't forget to vote (i sound like Obama).

PS: tomorrow i'm doing an interview in the Switch-show (about this blog).

PPS: "woot, woot" 18th of October at Café Capital Antwerp: Greatest Switch party with the Dominators, the Terminators + Ed&Kim. Retro galore!!

Long time no see

Uhm, i had a writer's block!

Just kidding, 2 weeks in Ibiza were great ... but now it's back to work again. Luckily i've got some tunes to keep me going :)

Respect is still burning, as several people asked me to repost some old sets. Well, here's your chance to expand the collection. 2 reposts + a new set by Jef K (i actually thought i had posted this one but seems like i didn't, damn you Alzheimer!). This is house-music the way i like it.

By the way, if you understand the Dutch lingo, here's an interesting review on David Mancuso's set in Paris a few weeks ago at Le Concorde Atlantique aka the Respect boat.

Respect at Fuse, Bob Sinclair 28.01.00. (re-post)
Respect at Fuse, Jef K 18.06.99. (re-post)

dave angel

Uhh, it's been a while but the past few weeks have been kinda hectec: i've got some constructing to do in my house (for the next few months ...) and that's taking a lot of my spare time.
But since all work and no play makes me a dull boy i decided to take some time off and i'm heading for Ibiza for about 2 weeks. (ow yeah!)
Before leaving i'm putting on a Dave Angel set recorded at Fuse. Have a listen, it's full on!

Dave Angel at Fuse, 16.01.99.
