a personal favo ... mo & benoelie

Time to share one of my favourite tapes ...
As "The Glimmers", Mo & Benoelie are currently one of Belgium's biggest export products (others are textile, beer, xtc and Axelle Red). These guys really took the time to work their way to the top. I heard them for the first time at the second Teknoville party in Cherry Moon, where they played in the chill-out room.



Their roots are in Ghent (export products: R&S/Music Man/2manydjs/waterzooi), where they started dj'ing round 1985. Pinpointing them to 1 style would be a shame. From hip-hop to funk, jungle to techno, house to ambient or elektro, they played it.
Besides playing in clubs they also did some compilations for a.o. Free the Funk, Eskimo, Série Noire, Dj-Kicks and recently Londons Fabric Club. Although their style has changed throughout the years they have my eternal respect for their contribution to the Belgian dancescene and Ghent's nightlife.

The set i'm posting was recorded in the FUSE-club (Brussels) for radio21's "GROOVE21" night, and was a warming-up for a live-set by Carl Craig that same night.
It's a funky blend of breakbeats, jungle, oldskool elektro, house, techno and ambient. To put all those styles in 1 fluent mix makes them ... f*cking genius!

My first non-taperip-post, an i'll keep it a short one.
Check out this grafitti-artist, he's a fuckin genius! Altough some of his works sold for over 50.000£, he still managed to stay anonymous. He operates all over the world and has also used his talent to make political statements (with a humourous bottomline).

techno 95

My first so called rave was at the "Belgium" event in 1995. The music i heard was somehow harder than what most dj's played in the clubs those days. The line-up was incredible (google it!) and 100% Belgian.

One of the jocks that really impressed me was dj g-force, i think i heard him for the first time that night. Although he was in charge of the closing (6 or 7 am), he played the hardest set, a new sound to me. This was techno, but not as i knew it. Hard bangin' tracks with some acid-influences, these were the early days of the Reload label (probably the first Belgian label to release and promote this sound, check their impressive discography).

Unfortunately i don't have any recordings of that night, but what i do have is a g-force tape, recorded at the Techno 95 rave in the Montini club. If you're into the harder side of techno you should check it. It starts with a long intro (the noble art of playing a good intro no longer exists!) and slowly builds up with some minimal and bleepy sounds, the journey continues "hard", and ends at a crazy tempo (keep your bpm-counters ready!!).

Katrien Klausing does it in a chill-out room

I've been running this blog for 2 months now. When i started it up i wasn't very sure where it was going to lead me ... but it seems like "ripping tapes" is currently the main theme (i never really was a poetry kinda guy).

If you're into the electronic stuff, you're probably familiar with the Belgian R&S-label (Renaat & Sabine). The reputation of the label is mainly based on its techno-releases, featuring artist like Ken Ishii, Model 500, Joey Beltram, Robert Leiner, Carl Craig (69), ... to name a few. Check the player on their website if you want to enjoy some of those classics.

One of the sub labels was called Apollo, highly respected for its ambient-releases. In the early 90's this music-style was often played in so called "chill-out" rooms.

The set i've ripped was recorded in a chill-out room at a party in the Belgian Montini Club on the 25th of March, 1994 and features dj Katrien Klausing , (former?) R&S employee, who does/did management for artists such as Biosphere, and who now also manages other labels, featuring artists like Ozark Henry, DeLaVega, Mo&Grazz, Grazzhoppa... so it seems like she stayed in Ghent after all those years.

Although the tape is 13 years old, the sound quality is still very good, and comparable to todays recordings (TDK rules!).

let's switch back to ... Teknoville

Does anybody remember this radio show? Studio Brussel's first serious approach towards electronic music and an inspiration to many djs (but probably not 2manydjs?)

Every now and then (=approx. once a year) these guys threw a party, and did a live-broadcast. Lucky were those who could join the party and have someone taping it for them at home (otherwise they would have nothing to post in their blogs 9 years later).

This is a tape rip from their annual at the Vooruit venue (Ghent), line-up that night:

Main room: Derrick May, Juan Atkins (if I remember well, he had to cancel), Moody (Belgian pride, doing a very nice warming-up) and Kevin Saunderson.

Ball room: Blake Baxter and Cari Lekebusch.

A night to remember for several reasons: Saunderson doing a great set and tearing the roof off, May (just the fact that he actually shows up is memorable) having technical problems and throwing away his headphones (no kidding, temper temper).

I'd have to check if I have any other Teknoville-tapes (somewhere out there ... Cherry Moon? Fuse?). This is a 90 minute recording of Kevin Saunderson's set.
